vpr matrix

Lauren’s got a VPR Matrix 185A5, and she runs Linux. The problem is that the “VPR Matrix” (Best Buy’s brand) is not supported very well by Linux.

Today I updated the kernel to 2.4.20 so that she could have the latest version of the orinoco drivers.

I’m trying to configure her NVidia card for 1280×854 (!) resolution. It’s not going too well.

The three big problems have been (1) wireless connectivity (orinoco driver in RedHat 8.0 dies regularly, requiring a restart before wireless will work again), (2) screen distortion (1024×768 resolution on a differently-proportioned screen), and (3) no APM, so she doesn’t know until it’s too late that the batteries are dying.

Cell phones

William and I went to the Verizon store a few days ago. I saw an awesome phone:

  1. made by Kyocera, the brand I presently use (which has an awesome UI)
  2. built-in Palm Pilot
  3. plays MP3s
  4. expansion slot (presumably for Palm expansion cards)
  5. apparently includes GPS (?!?!)

It’s $499 with a two year contract. The only other things I’d like to see are Bluetooth support and a huge battery life!

Gigli

A hundred horrible reviews of Gigli (from Suckful).

Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 5%.

Let’s not go see that one.
