Two funny sites, an old and a new

Sidetalkin’, a site making fun of the Nokia N-Gage gaming-slash-awkward phone, is making the blog rounds.

Stealth Disco is an awesome site that’s been around for a while. I tried to find it on google using words like “office workers secret dance dancing behind others” but couldn’t find it until I found my email from a long time ago. So, I hope this helps somebody! We need to start some stealth disco at work.

Halloween is upon us.

This is the only holiday I really worry about — it’s the only one where I feel like I have to prepare like homework. I never actually have the time to come up with a costume, because I put it on the back burner for work and school, and they leave me pretty drained, creatively. This Halloween, however, I think I’ve got a decent idea that I can pull together in the few hours before my party of choice begins. I’m going to go as Pac-Man. My plan is this: 2 cardboard or foam-core disks, painted … Continue Reading

Yay! Lauren is employed!

Lauren got hired by the Wake Forest University Library!!

The Maelstrom and the Old Sow

I’ve wanted to see the Maelstrom, off the coast of northern Norway, for some time. It’s the basis for Poe’s story, “The Maelstrom,” and I think it’s also the basis for the English word. Apparently there’s another version of the Maelstrom, though; the Old Sow in Maine.

Tanglewood 2002

I put our Tanglewood 2002 movie (4.4mb) on the site. Hope you like the soundtrack!

Update: in response to Will’s comment, let me explain what this movie is. Tanglewood is a large private park just west of Winston-Salem. For the last who knows how long, they have put on a Christmas lights show. Each year it’s gotten larger. We took these pictures through Lauren’s digital camera, which can make movies of up to 15 seconds. This movie was made using iMovie. Most of the images you see in this movie are three … Continue Reading

200,000 killed in Philippines; what’s up in Iraq

Yahoo! article about children, etc. killed in Philippines under George Bush, Sr.. Via LaughingMeme, which suggests that George Bush, Jr. might use Philippines-style killing as a model.

Syslog, Logwatch, and Perl

So I got to use logwatch today at work, in a very nitty-gritty way: I added an option ‘conf’ which lets you change the default configuration file. Logwatch is written in Perl.

This investigation and activity led me to consider writing my own log analysis program. Logwatch is very flexible, but it is a low level tool that is basically a glorified shell script. I would like to write my own, “Bump”, so that you could say “… run bump on a log …”

Seriously, though, if I get some time I am going to write my own … Continue Reading

10.3 for me so far

Synergy, an iTunes helper, took over lowercase “a”, meaning that I couldn’t type the letter “a” anymore. Keynote 1.0 couldn’t save files properly. Keynote had an update available via Software Update, though, and Synergy is less important to me since I don’t use iTunes as much.

Mail threading is a little weird (it uses the subject heading, so all my “Re: What up” mail looks like it’s the same conversation), but it’s nice. There’s a 10.3 version of GPGMail which requires an updated version of gpg which requires an updated version of fink.

It would … Continue Reading

Mac OS 10.3

10.3 arrived in the mail today. Funny thing is, it doesn’t go on sale until 8 PM.

iPod with Linux

We’ve been working on getting the iPod to work with Linux. We’ve followed Using an iPod with Linux from a very nice person at MIT. My only additional recommendation is to use xid3 along with mp3info to edit your ID3 tags.

p.s. did you know that people have put Linux on the iPod? That’s just not right.
